LONDON: The Nepalese Embassy organised a programme to mark the 60th National Democracy Day here in London on Friday evening (19th February).
It also hosted a reception on the embassy premises which was attended by prominent personalities of the Nepalese community residing in the UK, representatives of various Nepalese organizations, journalists, students, businessmen, embassy staff and others.
The day marks the establishment of democracy in Nepal by putting an end to the 104-year long autocratic Rana regime on Falgun 7, 2007 BS (1950).
Speaking during the function, Ambassador Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise shed light on the importance of the day. He added that the soon-to-be drafted new constitution of the country will not only address the people’s aspirations but also guarantee the peace and prosperity in the nation.
Minister Counsellor at the embassy Jhabindra Aryal had welcomed the participants. He remarked that the historic day of Falgun 07, 2007 BS was the first step in achieving democracy in the country and people’s movements in 2046 and 2063 BS further consolidated it.
Prior to the formal programme, national anthem of Nepal was played and one-minute silence was observed to pay homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for democracy in Nepal.
