A Bold, Captivating Fusion Hong Kong Love Story

This September, HKB invites you to experience a powerful new production, Septime Webre’s Romeo + Juliet — a thrilling reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy set against the evocative backdrop of 1960s Hong Kong. In this richly textured adaptation, ancient grudges simmer between triad families, passion ignites amidst street battles infused with authentic Hong Kong-style kung fu, and the iconic balcony scene comes alive on a stage inspired by the city’s historic streetscape.

The story centres on Juliet, the daughter of an unyielding Shanghainese tycoon determined to marry her off to a wealthy gweilo, unaware that she has already fallen for the son of her father’s fiercest enemy. Against this backdrop of conflict, audiences will be swept into the emotional world of first love and heartbreak, vividly brought to life through Prokofiev’s celebrated score and Webre’s innovative choreography. The production blends intense drama with cultural elements such as lively mahjong games and glamorous cheongsams, creating a uniquely immersive experience.
