Every winter, Hong Kong enters its year-end holiday ritual: the typhoon rains dry up, cold winds blow in and a city of underpaid 20-somethings frantically seek discount flights to anywhere warmer. By mid-November, my inbox was flooded with HK Express deals to Bali and Phu Quoc, promising paradise for less than a week’s rent. But I always closed the tab before booking, resigned to another grey winter.

Then came the Instagram notification. Gabriel, an older friend I hadn’t spoken to in years, replied to my story, asking about my holiday plans. When I told him I’d be in his hemisphere soon enough (visiting relatives in New York) he told me to stop by San Juan. “Stay for a week at my family’s house,” he offered in his characteristically quippy tone. “You don’t know a good time until you’ve been to Puerto Rico.”

I refused, pointing to the water. “I’m going to swim first,” I told them. Gabriel got up immediately; J laid back, opened his beer with his teeth and mumbled something in Spanish.

So off Gabriel and I went, walking, then running, into the waves, which crashed around and swelled us further from the shore. It was blue as far as the eye could see. No longer able to stand, I floated on my back in the cool water, feeling like everything in my life had led up to this picture-perfect moment.

“Paradise, right?” Gabriel teased, swimming nearer to me. I wanted to reply with something witty, but got distracted by his proximity — he was so close now that I could feel warmth radiating off his body. Cue the love song, I thought to myself as he leaned in. And then we were kissing; softly at first, then deeply, his arms holing me steady in the waves.

Of course, I’d already rehearsed this scenario on the flight over. My friends teased me mercilessly before I left, saying there was no way we’d remain platonic. The sun had set by the time we packed our bags and returned to the car. Gabriel and J had another unintelligible Spanish conversation as we drove back, which ended with Gabriel pulling over at a bus stop and J getting out. He said goodbye comically slowly, dapping up Gabriel and winking at me before closing the door. It was clear where the night was headed. The thought didn’t exactly titillate, but who was I to protest fate?

From that moment, everything played out predictably, albeit on 2x speed — radio blasting on the drive home, a quick dinner and a bizarrely silent smoke on his porch. I could sense him working out how to initiate so assiduously that our typical banter seized into strained politeness. In the end, he landed on the wonderfully original: “Want to see my room?”

The sex was over as soon as it began. Gabriel sweatily collapsed onto the bed, his arm slinging over me in an uncomfortable half-hug. “Wow,” he said into my hair, his breath hot. Was it so bad that I wanted to escape my routine and responsibilities, at least for a brief tropical moment? No, I suppose we all do. But as the weather cools and the sun creepingly begins to set earlier, I remind myself that my dream life isn’t waiting underneath a palm tree on the other side of the horizon, Medella in hand.

Think about incorporating more of a grinding action, as opposed to just thrusting, to ensure more direct contact with the clitoris. For deeper penetration and G-spot stimulation, lift one leg and rest it on your thrusting partner’s shoulder. The other leg can be placed around your lover’s thigh, like you would for standard Missionary. This is called the Praying Mantis position. For others, it’s a winding road of “maybe later,” “sadly, I can’t” or simply, “I’d rather not.” No matter where you land, though, one thing’s for sure: saying you don’t want children can feel like dropping a live grenade in a room full of baby enthusiasts. Expect side-eyes, unsolicited advice and a whole lot of “you’ll change your mind” spiels. But here’s the thing: no two experiences are the same. Whether you’ve faced backlash, disbelief or just a lot of awkward silences, your story is yours — and so is your choice. So, grab a cuppa (or a glass of wine, no judgement here), and join us as we dive into honest conversations with two bold, baby free women based in Hong Kong — and before you ask, both are over 30.

What responses do you hear most often when someone learns you don’t have children?

S: “Would you like to?”

V: A face of disappointment, or the classic, “Oh well, you will, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.” It blows my mind that in 2025 people can’t accept that not everyone has children. I feel like I’m looked at as less of a woman, or not fully “adult” because I’m not a mother.

Do you feel that these responses reflect assumptions about your life or priorities? How do you respond?

S: Most people are genuinely curious, and there’s no malice behind their questions, so I take no offence. I disagree with the assumption that those who don’t have children are selfish though. It’s important to be honest about what you want in life, and not a decision to take lightly.

V: I feel like I’m immediately judged and, in many cases, immediately dismissed. People have said to me, “You won’t understand joy or love until you have children,” while others tell me  that “the hardest thing you’ll ever experience in life is motherhood.” I can promise you, both of those comments are completely wrong. You have no idea what life I’ve lived or what challenges I’ve faced.

How do you navigate conversations in social or professional settings where motherhood is a central topic?

S: I’m very comfortable with it given the nature of my job, and the fact that most of my friends have kids. I’m happy to listen!

V: I’ve been told many times in the workplace, “You don’t understand, you’re not a parent,” so I’m automatically disregarded in conversations about motherhood — which honestly makes me feel incredibly left out. While it’s not my place to comment about the latest parenting trends, work should be a place where we are valued for our contributions and intelligence.

How has your decision shaped your relationships with friends or family, especially with those who are parents? Have you found support or community with others who share a similar experience?

S: I never made a conscious decision either way about having children. A few of my friends also sit on the fence on the topic, but I don’t think the fact that we can travel at a moment’s notice, or have a spontaneous night out requires support!

V: I didn’t make my decision lightly. I always planned to have kids, but my partner was diagnosed with cancer years ago; after that, I had to decide if I wanted to have kids knowing that I would potentially be a single mother. For years, people who have never been in my position have shared their opinions, including my own family. My parents have pushed me to have a baby — they say they would be there to support me, but that isn’t the same as having a child with my partner — I don’t want to parent with my parents.

Friends have also chimed in to say I would make an amazing mum, or they’ll say, “so what if you’re a single mother, parenthood is the biggest blessing.” The worst I hear is: “You should have a baby now so if your partner does pass away, you’ll always have a piece of him.” Even with the best intentions, my community doesn’t provide the support or understanding I would like, but it’s something I’ve come to terms with.

What advice would you give to someone struggling with societal expectations or pressures around motherhood?

S: I’m not in a position to give advice because I don’t struggle with it, although I can definitely empathise with how heartbreaking it can be for women who want children and are unable to have them.

V: Like everything else, I’ve found humour with it. When strangers or acquaintances confront the issue head on (asking me why I haven’t had kids yet), I make jokes. When it’s someone I know I give a bit of sass. I’ve almost created a formula where, depending on the question, I already have an answer ready to go. I guess that’s not really advice, but it’s the best I’ve got. Each of us have our different reasons and emotions surrounding the issue, so how I handle it may not be right for others.

We place too much importance on motherhood when defining a woman’s identity — but as more women choose not to have children, do you see these expectations shifting?

S: It can only improve as younger generations are generally more accepting of people and circumstances that fall outside societal convention. Statistically they’re also having less sex, and birth rates have plummeted globally, so it will become increasingly common, and expectations will have to shift accordingly.

V: No. I’d love to say I think the younger generation is shifting the narrative, but I’m just not confident. The value of a woman in 2025 is still tied to if she has (or plans to have) children. I’m not viewed by society in a positive light for my success or accomplishments, but rather in a negative one because of my choice to not have children — which is a real shame, because I think I’m pretty great, even without kids.

What To Expect When Visiting A Sexual Health Centre

Before you go

A prior appointment and doctor’s referral are not required at public clinics. Registration usually ends half-an-hour to an hour before closing time, but your wait will vary by location and time — so be sure to arrive early! All public clinics listed are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If you choose to go to a private clinic, you should call ahead to enquire if they provide the service you require and to make an appointment. Unless you have an emergency, most private clinics will be unable to see you if you just walk in. The Family Planning Association’s Youth Health Care Centres, in particular, only provide services to unmarried women under the age of 26.

Both public and private clinics will test for syphilis, gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal urethritis, genital herpes, genital warts, pubic lice, chlamydia and HIV/AIDS. These tests will be performed through urine and blood tests, swabs and visual examination (try to avoid going for a general check-up while menstruating. Emergency contraceptives, counselling and vaccines are more typically found at private clinics. Though we believe that you should spare no cost for your health, the clinics listed below offer services that fit a range of budgets — from free testing at public clinics, to comprehensive packages costing over $1,000.

What to bring

No matter where you choose to go, you must have your HKID card, or at least a form of photo identification. You will then need to register your information at reception and most clinics will provide you with a card for future visits. Some clinics may require a doctor’s referral and previous health records.

During your visit

A nurse or doctor will speak to you privately about your health and sexual history. The questions may elicit a red face, but from our experiences the staff are quite open-minded and helpful. They’ll talk you through different methods of birth control, different STI/STDs and how they can be treated, and will try their best to make you feel comfortable, no matter the reason for your visit. Their bedside manner is highly professional as well.

Results

You’ll be given results straight away for chlamydia and gonorrhoea and the nurse will chat to you about anything else that may be flagged at this stage, including performing follow-ups to previous sexual partners to get checked. For everything else, though it may be nerve-wracking, patience is key. You will have to return to the social hygiene clinics after 3 weeks in person to get your results, as its policy does not allow notification over call or text. Private clinics are generally faster and you can choose to be notified with a simple phone call.

What’s next?

If all is well, keep on keeping on! If not, don’t fret — we’ve all been there. Not only can you speak to a nurse or counsellor, but we urge you to reach out to friends or family. If you want to learn more or even just grab some info for your partner, both public and private clinics offer educational services. We recommend you get screened after every new partner, or at least every three to six months. If you’ve had unprotected sex or are experiencing any new symptoms, the only risk is not knowing! Last but not least, wrapping it before tapping it isn’t the only thing that keeps sex healthy and safe —  you and your partner(s) must also give and receive consent!
