How To Get To Horizon Plaza

Horizon Plaza is located on Ap Lei Chau, an island just off Hong Kong Island. The easiest way to get there is to head towards South Horizons, a residential estate on one side of the island. You can take a bus, car or the MTR.

MTR: Take the South Island MTR line to South Horizons. It’s about a 10-minute walk from South Horizons MTR Station, Exit C.

Bus: Take buses 90 or 90B from Central, get off at Ap Lei Chau Estate and walk over. Alternatively, you can take bus route 671 from Lei Tung Market and alight at Horizon Plaza.

You can also drive to Horizon Plaza — parking is on the third floor.

What To Know About Getting Around Horizon Plaza

The 25-storey plaza is best explored via stairs. Skip the customer lift and walk up one flight of stairs to the first floor, then take the service elevator right to the top and make your way down to our favourites. Or map out where you want to go and start at the uppermost floor of your choice.

Sassy Tip: There are no floors 13, 14, 23 and 24, and remember that parking is on the third floor.

From Hysan Place’s 3COINS to Daiso all across Hong Kong, our craze over Japanese discount stores feels endless. But how do these ultra-affordable lifestyle shops compare?

Move over, Daiso — there’s a new Japanese discount store in town! 3COINS, the trendy, Osaka-born ¥300 lifestyle brand, recently opened its first Hong Kong flagship at Hysan Place, promising stylish home goods and accessories at wallet-friendly prices. But how does it stack up against Daiso, the OG ¥100 shop that’s been a staple for budget shoppers worldwide? From pricing quirks to product vibes, let’s break down what sets these two Japanese imports apart.

What Is A ¥100 Store: How Do 3COINS & Daiso Differ?

Think of ¥100 shops the Japanese equivalent to the UK’s Poundland or Dollar Tree in the US, where almost everything costs ¥100 (about $5, plus tax). These shops are packed with everything from kitchenware to stationery, all at unbeatable prices. The king of ¥100 stores, Daiso boasts 34 Hong Kong outposts under Aeon’s Living Plaza brand. Its Hysan Place store mirrors Japanese pricing — unlike Daiso, which adjusts costs overseas — and targets shoppers wanting “affordable aesthetics” (think Muji on a budget). The key difference? Daiso wins on sheer volume and bargains, while 3COINS trades up for design flair.

The 3COINS Craze: Homeware, Pet Goodies & Kitchen Must-Haves

Because of its pricing, Daiso has become a Hong Kong favourite for cheap cleaning products, toiletries like makeup and skincare, plus knickknacks like craft-making supplies. But if you’re hunting for affordable and aesthetic upgrades, 3COINS is your go-to for Instagram-worthy homeware, adorable pet accessories and clever kitchen gadgets with a minimalist Japanese twist. Here’s what makes 3COINS’s 2,500 product lineup stand out:

Is 3COINS Worth The Hype?

Considering the social media hype, we expected big things from 3COINS’s opening in Causeway Bay — and while we weren’t necessarily disappointed by the products, we also weren’t blown away. For one, the basement-level Hysan Place store is rather small (hence the massive queues that persist to this day), so the shop gets unnecessarily crowded and makes browsing difficult. This makes running errands pretty inconvenient, so we’ll be sticking to Daiso’s massive outposts for everyday items.

On the other hand, we were pleasantly surprised by the range of jewellery and accessories offered at 3COINS, from cute claw claw clips and earrings to rings, hair bobbles and more (all priced at just $18!). We also weren’t let down by the homeware and furniture, but it’s worth noting that nearly all retail for far higher than $18. For instance, our editor purchased a small fluffy seat that doubles as storage for $80. That’s still affordable (IKEA sells something similar for nearly $200), but it’s not ¥300.

Nevertheless, considering Hong Kongers’ obsession with all things Japanese (especially for a bargain!) we’re fairly certain that 3COINS is here to stay. We just hope the next location is a little larger, stocks more products and perhaps is based Kowloon-side.

618 Shanghai Street

618 Shanghai Street is a revitalised cluster of ten pre-war shophouses (or “tong lau”) located in the Mong Kok section of Shanghai Street. In the 1920s and ’30s, the buildings formed a vibrant commercial hub that sold everything from feng shui tools to traditional Chinese wedding gowns and ceremonial items, but by the ’70s, the area became more known for its sex shops. Over time, the historic structures fell into decline, but they’ve since been lovingly restored and reestablished as a shopping centre! Our fave stores here include:

Red Brick Building

Constructed in 1895, this eye-catching red building was once the Engineer’s Office for Hong Kong’s old Water Pumping Station on Shanghai Street. It’s the last surviving piece of the original station — after operations stopped in 1911, everything else was torn down or repurposed. Saved from the wrecking ball, it earned Grade 1 historic status in 2000 thanks to its stunning details: rustic red bricks, cast iron pipes, elegant arches and intricate granite trimmings. A true relic of old Hong Kong!

Did you know that our sense of smell is strongly linked to our mood (you know that feeling of walking past a stranger with really good perfume)? That’s one of the many reasons we’re hoarders of scented candles and home diffusers — they instantly lighten up the scene (metaphorically and literally!). That said, shopping for candles can be a tad bit overwhelming with all the endless choices available, so we’ve tried and tested all of the following local and international candle brands in Hong Kong. Call us candle connoisseurs, if you will!

Sassy Tip: Know your candles! Compared to paraffin wax, soy wax and beeswax burn for longer and emit less soot (it’s more eco-friendly!), they also don’t drip as much (keeping your surface clean and tidy) nor release toxins, making it safer to inhale.

You can scrape the wax and directly apply to your skin or burn it for 30 minutes and cool for a couple of minutes and use it as a massage oil. Do note that it’s not safe to use on the face.
