How To Get To Horizon Plaza

Horizon Plaza is located on Ap Lei Chau, an island just off Hong Kong Island. The easiest way to get there is to head towards South Horizons, a residential estate on one side of the island. You can take a bus, car or the MTR.

MTR: Take the South Island MTR line to South Horizons. It’s about a 10-minute walk from South Horizons MTR Station, Exit C.

Bus: Take buses 90 or 90B from Central, get off at Ap Lei Chau Estate and walk over. Alternatively, you can take bus route 671 from Lei Tung Market and alight at Horizon Plaza.

You can also drive to Horizon Plaza — parking is on the third floor.

What To Know About Getting Around Horizon Plaza

The 25-storey plaza is best explored via stairs. Skip the customer lift and walk up one flight of stairs to the first floor, then take the service elevator right to the top and make your way down to our favourites. Or map out where you want to go and start at the uppermost floor of your choice.

Sassy Tip: There are no floors 13, 14, 23 and 24, and remember that parking is on the third floor.

Donate or sell your clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, books and more in Hong Kong to make sure they get a second lease of life…

It’s no secret that our tiny apartments in Hong Kong can accumulate a whole lot over the years. If you’re anything like us and have a tendency to hoard, we bet you’re constantly left wading through piles of clothes and fancy dress odds and ends. That’s why we’re strong advocates of a good old fashioned clear out. Clothes, books, furniture, even electronics – sort through it all, then donate or sell the things you don’t want to these awesome charities, non-profits and consignment stores.

Sassy Tip: Do you have broken or poor quality unwanted items? Scroll to the end to find out where you can legally discard these belongings.

Other Notable Mentions For Selling Used Goods In Hong Kong

For the most part, all that’s required for these sites is photos of your item, your asking price and any contact details. Don’t forget to include measurements as well as a few notes on the condition and age. Make sure to also upload photos that show a few different angles – it’ll save you from an influx of questions later on.

Where To Donate: Discard Items

Where To Discard In Hong Kong

If your items are not in any condition to donate or sell, consider looking into whether you’re able to recycle your goods. Small and large electronic appliances, for instance, including fridges, ovens, washing machines and air-conditioning units, can be scraped for parts. Head here to explore the different government recycling resources available.

Alternatively, if there really is no way to save your items, the city has quite a few refuse points where you can leave larger items that won’t fit in your regular trash. It may take some manpower to carry that mattress halfway across Central, but know that it’s illegal to fly-tip in Hong Kong, and you may face a hefty fine for just leaving your furniture by the bins. Click on the links below to see where your nearest refuse point is.

Where To Dispose Of Or Recycle Your Christmas Tree In Hong Kong

Getting rid of your Christmas trees can be quite a chore. While you’re mulling over the choice between a Douglas Fir and a Virginia Pine, it’s wise to start planning how to dispose of your tree once the festive season wraps up.

For those who lean towards eco-friendly disposal options, consider these:

  • Community Green Stations: These stations dot various locations across Hong Kong, offering a convenient way to recycle your unwanted Christmas trees. Keep in mind that only natural trees are accepted, so don’t even think about sneaking in that plastic one! www.wastereduction.gov.hk
  • EcoPark: Hong Kong’s inaugural recycling business park boasts a biomass section where you can drop off your natural Christmas tree. While you’re there, make it a family outing and explore the engaging Visitor’s Centre with the kids. www.ecopark.com.hk

Additionally, many local florists and Christmas tree delivery services in Hong Kong listed in this guide also offer disposal and recycling services, complimentary, or for a nominal fee! Don’t overlook this convenient option; simply check the extra box when you’re filling out your order form.

From supplement multipacks to frozen American classics, Costco has everything you need in life (not being dramatic). Thankfully, the superstore’s branch in Shenzhen means that Sassy is here to highlight all the food, lifestyle, electronics and even camping gear you absolutely cannot miss.

When Costco first opened in Shenzhen, the queues were legendary — shoppers waited hours just to get a taste of the iconic American warehouse shopping experience. Now, the hype has settled (a little), but the deals are still unbeatable. With its single-floor layout featuring a mix of American and Chinese products, Shenzhen Costco is worth a trip across the border. Sassy tried-and-approved, this is our guide on what to buy, how to shop smart and the hidden gems you won’t want to miss at Shenzhen Costco. So clear out your freezer space, pack a suitcase and read on to discover more!

Costco aisles how to get there Sassy Guide

Getting there (and getting it all home)

Costco Shenzhen is open daily from 9am to 9pm, and many Hong Kongers can head over via tour buses or private cars arranged exclusively just for Costco runs, or by taking public transport. The fastest and most convenient method to travel to China is via the High-Speed Rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen North Station, which takes under 30 minutes. Other options include the MTR (Metro) via the East Rail Line to the Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau border crossings, or a ferry from Hong Kong Sheung Wan or the airport to Shekou Port. Once in Shenzhen, use Shenzhen Metro Line 4 or Line 6 to reach Hongshan Station.

If you’re worried about how to lug everything back, look for the SF Express stall near the garage — they’ll pack and ship your haul back home, often the same or next day. And yes, their shipping limits basically don’t exist.

Sassy Tip: They only speak Mandarin, so prepare a translation app or brush up on your Chinese skills! Don’t forget to have your home address ready in Chinese.

Costco seasonal steals camping gear sassy guide

Seasonal Steals — For seasonal essentials

Upon entering Costco, the first thing you’ll see are the seasonal items, which should give you a small taste of what’s to come. While this rotates, you can always expect daily essentials (especially in Hong Kong, where the weather is pretty consistently hot all year round!) From sunscreen and handheld fans (yes, Hong Kong daily essentials) to umbrellas in every style (again, Hong Kong essentials), Shenzhen Costco makes the perfect trip for a Hong Konger. Plus, you’ll also see year-round supplies like camping chairs and water activity gear (like goggles and swimming rings!) for your next beach day or hike!

Costco Shenzhen camera bundles DJI Osmo

Electronics & Gadgets — Camera bundles and electronic staples

The electronics section is surprisingly strong, with great pricing on electronics and camera bundles. From door cameras (~¥2,800) to the infamous vlogging camera, the DJI Osmo, Costco’s electronic section is not only well-stocked, but up-to-date on the latest gadgets. For those who like filming on the go, various bundles of Insta360 cameras are available starting from ¥3,000.  We also recommend checking out the Anker 100W wall charger — with three ports, it’s like an extension cable, without the trip-hazard wire!

Plus, for the singers and karaoke fanatics, you can even invest in your very own Karaoke machine for at-home singing without the hefty price (soundproofing sold separately).

Sassy Tip: Everything is plug-compatible for China, so you may need some extra adapters for use in Hong Kong or abroad!

Costco clothing Adidas tracksuits and Kirkland staples

Clothing Deals — Looking good on a budget

Costco’s clothing aisles are basically a fashion treasure hunt. You’ll find the Kirkland Signature line, which delivers affordable basics that are surprisingly good quality, alongside branded outlet-style pieces that feel straight out of a TJ Maxx haul — think Adidas tracksuits, sneakers, socks and more. Stock rotates quickly, so if you spot something you love, don’t wait — because chances are it won’t be there next time (but that’s just an excuse for you to go back again!)

Costco Shenzhen pantry staples and large multipacks

Pantry Staples & Paper Goods — Laundry capsules and Samsonite luggage sets

When it comes to home supplies, Shenzhen Costco does not disappoint. Stocking up on household staples at Shenzhen Costco is a no-brainer — especially if you’ve got the storage space. Paper towels and toilet paper come in giant packs that’ll keep you covered for ages, while the nuts, dried fruit and supplements are sold in mega multipacks perfect for families (or serious snackers).

You’ll spot Glasslock tempered glass food storage sets (around ¥200) and Pyrex dish sets that are of solid value. Plus, our Sassy Team loves to stock up on laundry capsules in bulk!

For bigger-ticket finds, the Costco-exclusive Samsonite three-piece luggage sets (around ¥1,000) are a complete steal compared to retail.

And if you’re the outdoorsy type, don’t skip the camping tents, folding chairs and reinforced cooler bags!

Don’t skip the pet section either — it’s full of Kirkland-branded food and toys that’ll make your furry friend just as happy about your Costco run as you are, especially for those of us with larger dogs!

Sassy Tip: If you underestimate how much you’re hauling back, grab a portable cart in-store for just over ¥100 — you can test it and roll it out the same day!

Costco's stunning alcohol selection Quality spirits for a fraction of the price Kirkland Vodka

Costco’s stunning alcohol selection — Quality spirits for a fraction of the price

Costco’s Kirkland Signature alcohol line is the ultimate not-so-secret hack for savvy shoppers. Their vodka is famously produced in the same distillery as Grey Goose, just bottled under the Kirkland name for a fraction of the price. The gin follows the same formula — Bombay Sapphire quality without the hefty price tag. And if you’re into wine or spirits, keep an eye out for vintage bottles and premium liquor, which are often sold here at prices you’d never find in regular retail.

Health Food — Chinese medicine and supplements for daily snacking

For those interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Costco offers at ¥245, a huge double pack of Chun Pei, aka Dried Tangerine Peels, which are often used as traditional seasoning in Chinese cooking and traditional medicine. Offering antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, improved digestive health and even contribution to skin, hair and oral health, the double pack at Costco comes at a fraction of the price you might expect from a TCM store in Hong Kong.

Frozen Food — American and international classics for home cooking

Frozen Food — American and international classics for home cooking

The frozen aisle at Shenzhen Costco is absolute heaven for anyone craving American comfort food. Think giant boxes of mozzarella sticks, mac & cheese and tater tots ready to go straight from your freezer. You’ll also find frozen shrimp, Korean dumplings and noodles and perfectly sliced beef — ideal for a DIY Korean BBQ or Hotpot night at home! Plus, jumbo sizes of daily staples like yoghurt, but at incredible value (Chobani yoghurt is our fave!).

Sassy Tip: Come hungry to test out some free samples! Not only are they a highlight of the shopping experience, but they’re a delicious and helpful way to test out a new product before you buy it!

Fresh Food & Bakery Finds Rotisserie chickens and decadent desserts Costco shenzhen

Fresh Food & Bakery Finds — Rotisserie chickens and decadent desserts

The fresh food and bakery section at Shenzhen Costco is where the real feasting begins. You’ll find party-size tiramisu, massive birthday cakes, sushi platters and the iconic rotisserie chicken (at just ¥40, it’s even better value than some Hong Kong Lunch Sets!) alongside cooked ribs and party trays that make party entertaining effortless. Seasonal bakes are a must-try too, with pistachio croissants, matcha or durian cream puffs and even a decadent durian cheesecake (if you dare!). For the savoury fans, Costco-sized prosciutto trays and hefty cheese blocks (look out for gems like Drunken Goat) are unbeatable for the price and ideal for tapas nights.

Sassy Tip: The fresh fruit is incredible, but tricky to bring back across the border, so best to enjoy it on the spot!

Pharmacy & Beauty — Stock up on trending Korean and Japanese beauty

Pharmacy & Beauty — Stock up on trending Korean and Japanese beauty

While Costco Shenzhen doesn’t stock medication, the pharmacy and beauty aisles are still worth a stop. You’ll be able to find supplements and protein powders in a sure supply, and every vitamin you could possibly be deficient in!

You’ll also find Asian beauty products in jumbo packs (think 1+1 deals!), plus Japanese skincare like Mentholatum Lotions for around ¥100 for four bottles and even a good helping of Korean sunscreens. For everyday essentials, they’ve also got pads and other sanitary products, although tampons aren’t part of the lineup.

Food Court Staples Because you can't go home without stopping at the food court Costco Foodcourt shenzhen

Food Court Staples — Because you can’t go home without stopping at the food court

Last but definitely not least is the Costco food court, which serves up all the American classics with a few fun local twists. You can dig into huge pizzas with rotating flavours, seasonal goodies like the Korean-inspired bulgogi bake and even buckets of Kirkland crispy fried chicken. Depending on the time of year, you might also spot corn or seafood soups or festive treats like pork mooncakes (not the weirdest one we’ve seen). It’s a Costco tradition to make a stop at the food court, so you must oblige.

Shopping at Shenzhen Costco is more than just stocking up — it’s an experience. From Hysan Place’s 3COINS to Daiso all across Hong Kong, our craze over Japanese discount stores feels endless. But how do these ultra-affordable lifestyle shops compare?

Move over, Daiso — there’s a new Japanese discount store in town! 3COINS, the trendy, Osaka-born ¥300 lifestyle brand, recently opened its first Hong Kong flagship at Hysan Place, promising stylish home goods and accessories at wallet-friendly prices. But how does it stack up against Daiso, the OG ¥100 shop that’s been a staple for budget shoppers worldwide? From pricing quirks to product vibes, let’s break down what sets these two Japanese imports apart.

Daiso versus 3coins, what's the difference, japanese lifestyle discount stores, most cheap in hong kong

What Is A ¥100 Store: How Do 3COINS & Daiso Differ?

Think of ¥100 shops the Japanese equivalent to the UK’s Poundland or Dollar Tree in the US, where almost everything costs ¥100 (about $5, plus tax). These shops are packed with everything from kitchenware to stationery, all at unbeatable prices. The king of ¥100 stores, Daiso boasts 34 Hong Kong outposts under Aeon’s Living Plaza brand. Known for its chaotic variety and ultra-low prices (most items start at $12), it’s a one-stop shop for practical — if not always chic — finds.

A sleeker sibling to the ¥100 model, 3COINS prices items at ¥300 ($18, tax-included) and focuses on trendy home decor, fashion accessories and collabs. Its Hysan Place store mirrors Japanese pricing — unlike Daiso, which adjusts costs overseas — and targets shoppers wanting “affordable aesthetics” (think Muji on a budget). The key difference? Daiso wins on sheer volume and bargains, while 3COINS trades up for design flair.

The 3COINS Craze: Homeware, Pet Goodies & Kitchen Must-Haves

Because of its pricing, Daiso has become a Hong Kong favourite for cheap cleaning products, toiletries like makeup and skincare, plus knickknacks like craft-making supplies. But if you’re hunting for affordable and aesthetic upgrades, 3COINS is your go-to for Instagram-worthy homeware, adorable pet accessories and clever kitchen gadgets with a minimalist Japanese twist. Here’s what makes 3COINS’s 2,500 product lineup stand out:

Stylish & Functional Homewear

  • Minimalist decor: Think sleek storage bins, geometric vases and neutral-toned bedding
  • Space-saving furniture: Foldable stools, stackable organisers and compact shelving units
  • Seasonal collections: Limited-edition drops, like cherry blossom-themed cushions or Christmas decorations

Is 3COINS Worth The Hype?

Considering the social media hype, we expected big things from 3COINS’s opening in Causeway Bay — and while we weren’t necessarily disappointed by the products, we also weren’t blown away. For one, the basement-level Hysan Place store is rather small (hence the massive queues that persist to this day), so the shop gets unnecessarily crowded and makes browsing difficult. This makes running errands pretty inconvenient, so we’ll be sticking to Daiso’s massive outposts for everyday items.

On the other hand, we were pleasantly surprised by the range of jewellery and accessories offered at 3COINS, from cute claw claw clips and earrings to rings, hair bobbles and more (all priced at just $18!). We also weren’t let down by the homeware and furniture, but it’s worth noting that nearly all retail for far higher than $18. For instance, our editor purchased a small fluffy seat that doubles as storage for $80. That’s still affordable (IKEA sells something similar for nearly $200), but it’s not ¥300.

Nevertheless, considering Hong Kongers’ obsession with all things Japanese (especially for a bargain!) we’re fairly certain that 3COINS is here to stay. We just hope the next location is a little larger, stocks more products and perhaps is based Kowloon-side.

Keen to try a new way of renting? From Dash Living and Weave to Owl Square, here are the best co-living spaces in Hong Kong, including shared apartments, flat complexes and more…

Have you heard of co-living spaces? Similar to co-working spaces and offices, co-living offers young professionals (especially in a brand-new city!) an alternative to traditional apartment and flat renting that’s far more affordable than what’s available in our city’s pricey property market. These co-living spaces are flexible (short-term rental plans!), spacious and modern, fitted with all the furniture and appliances you could need (like a serviced apartment!), and come with plenty of benefits and amenities (depending on the co-living space) and usually a communal space too, so you’ll feel right at home and well looked after. Here are our picks of the best co-living spaces in Hong Kong.
