Cheung Chau Bun Festival (Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival)

Cheung Chau Bun Festival (Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival)

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival, aka Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival or Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, is a seven-day Taoist sacrificial ceremony that is celebrated annually. It originated in the 18th century when Cheung Chau (then infiltrated by pirates) was affected by a plague. Residents and local fishermen paraded the village disguised as deities to drive away evil spirits.

The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth month of the Lunar calendar and it usually coincides with Buddha’s Birthday (which means you can make the most of the public holiday!).

Each year, the Bun Festival attracts thousands of goers who gather to witness the colourful parades coupled with traditional lion and dragon dance, and the ‘bun snatching competition’. Three towers are placed by the Pak Tai Temple and are entirely covered by buns (plastic ones) and competitors race to the top to snatch as many buns as possible (the more the buns, the better the fortune).

Note that during the Bun Festival, the entire island goes vegetarian for three days – most of the restaurants also adhere to this traditional so meat and seafood options may be removed from the menu during these days. Click for more info on the Cheung Chau Bun Festival.

Cheung Chau Food

It goes without saying that the area’s main attraction is Repulse Bay Beach. So make sure you spend some time on the sand. If you feel like stretching your legs, you can walk over to the neighbouring beach, Deep Water Bay – after all, two beaches are surely better than one! This gentle stroll offers some beautiful views of the coast and only takes 30 to 40 minutes.

If you’re starting from Deep Water Bay and facing the sea, simply head left along the Seaview Promenade to get to Repulse Bay.

How To Get To Horizon Plaza

Horizon Plaza is located on Ap Lei Chau, an island just off Hong Kong Island. The easiest way to get there is to head towards South Horizons, a residential estate on one side of the island. You can take a bus, car or the MTR.

MTR: Take the South Island MTR line to South Horizons. It’s about a 10-minute walk from South Horizons MTR Station, Exit C.

Bus: Take buses 90 or 90B from Central, get off at Ap Lei Chau Estate and walk over. Alternatively, you can take bus route 671 from Lei Tung Market and alight at Horizon Plaza.

You can also drive to Horizon Plaza — parking is on the third floor.

Horizon Plaza, 2 Lee Wing Street, Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong, horizonplaza.com.hk

What To Know About Getting Around Horizon Plaza

The 25-storey plaza is best explored via stairs. Skip the customer lift and walk up one flight of stairs to the first floor, then take the service elevator right to the top and make your way down to our favourites. Or map out where you want to go and start at the uppermost floor of your choice.

Sassy Tip: There are no floors 13, 14, 23 and 24, and remember that parking is on the third floor.

coffee with latte art from shek tong tsui's twenty one from eight cafe

Twenty One From Eight Cafe – Latte art lovers adore this Shek Tong Tsui coffee shop

This might seem like just your average, neighbourhood-favourite cafe, but Twenty One From Eight is also home to a Sassy favourite: tiramisu mochi! Our MD, Haley, can’t get enough of it – and it doesn’t hurt that her dog is welcome at this joint either. Remember to snap the incredible latte art before sipping – it’s that good. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t let its French Toast options pass you by (who’s brave enough to try the Italian Bliss with ricotta, parma ham and honey?), and if you’ve arrived hungry, we hear the apple and feta pasta is solid.

Sassy Tip: Twenty One From Eight Cafe also offers multiple sets – like Tapas Delight and Duet Set – that are worth checking out.

Sir Berwick by No Milkshake No Life – Possibly the best milkshakes in Hong Kong

Tucked away on Hill Road, we were initially drawn to this quirky resto for its selection of boozy milkshakes, but upon further inspection, No Milkshake No Life’s seriously Instagrammable menu is worth stopping by for, too. Its burgers, pancakes and own take on poutine (hello, cheese steak fries) are sure to hit the spot, but truth be told, it’s still the milkshakes that keep us coming back for more. Marked by a rich history and packed with plenty of things to eat, see and do, Kwun Tong should be the next area you explore on Kowloon side.

Full of history, Kwun Tong has roots dating back to before Hong Kong’s establishment as a city-state and any of its development. Formerly a salt production centre back in the 1200s, the district’s coast has been a hub for fishermen and sailors alike. Part of the district then morphed into a factory area, filled up by creatives looking to embark upon entrepreneurial ventures. Since then, the area has undergone modern development, and is now an eclectic mishmash of old creaky buildings and creative businesses, with skyscrapers divided into offices (not so unlike those found in Central and Admiralty).

Whether you’re looking to explore a bit of local history or hoping to check out some new places to eat and shop, we’ve done our research and have found our favourite and most interesting places to hit up in this Kowloon neighbourhood.

Also known as the Sam Ka Tsuen Seafood Precinct, Lei Yue Mun Seafood Bazaar is a must-visit in Kwun Tong. historic hikes hong kong ancient trails hikes: devil's peak

Wilson Trail and Devil’s Peak

The Kwun Tong district is brimming with history, and the Devil’s Peak, with its batteries and redoubts, is one of the most historical spots in the area. Built in 1898, the Gough Battery is the oldest structure of the three remaining fortresses. Formerly used to guard the Lei Yue Mun Pass which was crucial to the access to the south of China, the pass was garrisoned by pirates and the British military.

The spot offers stunning views of Lei Yue Mun and the coastline from the Victoria Harbour to Tseung Kwan O. However, getting to the view is not for the faint of heart; besides taking a cab up, the only other way to access the Devil’s Peak is by section 3 of the Wilson Trail, a fairly difficult hike that starts in Lam Tin and ends in Tseng Lan Shue, stretching out to 9.4km in total and estimated to last around four hours.

Lei Yue Mun Coast Lighthouse

For a breathtaking sunset, head over to the Lei Yue Mun Coast Lighthouse. Located on a tiny rock island that can only be accessed at low tide, it has functioned for more than 50 years and still operates to warn ships of rocky terrain by the coast today. Although the lighthouse itself is not very impressive, photos taken from the lookout at sea will more than make up for it.

Jisoo’s Elegant Explorer Itinerary

Jisoo should visit Hong Kong Disneyland Blackpink Concert

Start the morning with a trip to Disneyland

Despite being the oldest member of Blackpink, we know how much Jisoo loves exploring and taking in touristy activities, so we’d recommend a visit to Disneyland, because we know how much she loves Frozen! Often hitting up Disney World and Disney Stores when travelling abroad, Hong Kong Disneyland is a great day-trip for anyone visiting the city.

Aqualuna Afternoon Tea Cruise

Afternoon indulgence with a twist

For an afternoon indulgence, we recommend a spot of high tea for this Blackpink member, and The Peninsula’s high tea is a must-try in our books! But since we also know Jisoo is a fan of ferry rides, we suggest for more unique experience, such as Aqualuna’s Afternoon Tea Cruise. Sail on board Hong Kong’s spectacular harbour on one of the last remaining red sail junks, with a curated selection of yum cha favourites from Dim Sum Library (available with vegetarian options too!) while enjoying the stunning views of Hong Kong’s skyline!

Sassy Tip: For those who enjoy the finer things in life, like Jisoo, may enjoy Duddell’s for stylish contemporary Cantonese fare and The Chinese Library for award-winning Chinese gastronomy in Central.
