Happy Year of the Horse! Celebrate Chinese New Year 2026 with these special CNY menus and festive dining events, from auspicious buffet spreads to family reunion dinners…

Key ingredients carry deep meaning — abalone represents wealth, whole fish signifies surplus year after year and oysters sound like “good fortune” in Chinese. Keep reading for our picks of Chinese New Year meals in Hong Kong!

New Year’s resolutions can be tough, but these apps will help you become the person you swear you’ll be every January!

New year, new you… at least that’s the plan, right? We all start January with big intentions, but actually sticking to those shiny New Year’s resolutions is a different story. Luckily, there’s an app for that — actually, there are loads! Screens get a bad rep, but we literally have the world at our fingertips, so here’s your gentle nudge to Marie Kondo your phone: delete that social media app you’re lowkey addicted to and replace it with something that brings you joy! Here’s some inspiration for the best self-improvement apps, whether that means learning a new language, exploring a new place or beginning your meditation journey.

If your New Year’s resolution is . . .

To learn a new language, try Duolingo

You’ve heard it a million times before, but this language app really is one of the best for sticking to your goals. From the way it gamifies your progress to the user-friendly interface, Duolingo makes learning a new language both easy and enjoyable! There’s just one major setback for Hong Kongers: the app only offers Cantonese lessons for Mandarin speakers, so if you’re hoping to (finally) pick up some of the local language, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Download Duolingo via the App Store or Google Play.

To exercise more, try AllTrails

If you downloaded MyFitnessPal as a pre-teen and were told to restrict your calories, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Okay, not really, but thankfully times have changed since health apps first came onto the scene. AllTrails offers a great alternative to traditional workouts as the app encourages you to get out into nature instead of hitting up an overpriced gym. With detailed trail maps that guide you through numerous outdoor activities, you’ll be working up a sweat in no time!

everydollar app money tracker saving new years resolution

To save money, try EveryDollar

Cutting back on spending is the most popular New Year’s resolution globally, every year. Where to watch the 2026 new year's eve fireworks in Hong Kong? Where To Watch The Fireworks From Kowloon

Where To Watch The 2026 New Year’s Eve Fireworks From Kowloon:

  • Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade — The perfect spot to nab a great photo, this will be one of the busiest areas as the (arguably) best views of the National Day fireworks can be seen here!
  • Avenue Of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui — Watch the National Day fireworks amongst “stars” from this quintessential Hong Kong landmark. Expect crowds.
  • West Kowloon Art Park and Waterfront Promenade — With its easy access from Kowloon MTR Station/Elements Mall, this makes the excursion simpler. Make sure to read our ultimate guide here.
  • Harbour City Rooftop Car Park and Ocean Terminal Deck — A great option is to head over early, squeeze in a spot of shopping, nab an early dinner then head up to catch the view!
  • Kowloon Peak – Fei Ngo Shan — For the more adventurous, this is a great vantage point that also adds a rewarding trek with exercise! Night hike, anyone?
  • Sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck, ICC — Watch the fireworks from the 100th floor of the tallest building in Hong Kong.

Where To Watch The 2026 New Year’s Eve Fireworks From Hong Kong Island:

  • ifc Mall —ifc’s rooftop is a super popular place to watch the fireworks; there is a public free-seating area and you can head over early to grab a burger and cheesy chips from Shake Shack.
  • Tamar Park — Pack a picnic, set up a tent, and watch the sky light up!
  • Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai — With the Convention Centre in the background and the fireworks in the foreground (sky!) this is a great spot on the island to watch!
  • Wan Chai Temporary Promenade — A five minute walk from the MTR Exhibition Centre Station and one of the most popular destinations!
  • The Peak — No doubt the Peak will have one of the best views on the island, it will also be quite packed. Make sure to go early to grab a spot in one of the many viewing areas including the Observation Deck at The Peak Galleria, the Lions Pavilion and Sky Terrace 428.
  • Certain parts of Bowen Drive (just past the intersection of Bowen Road and Bowen Drive) and Braemar Hill also serve as lesser-known vantage points.
  • Central Ferry Pier — A great place to view the fireworks, which is why it will also be very popular. Go early and secure your spot!

Tips For Watching The 2026 new year's eve Fireworks In Hong Kong

Tips For Watching The 2026 New Year’s Eve Fireworks In Hong Kong

  • Get there early. We know you know this, but note that once spots reach a maximum capacity, the police will close them off. So leave earlier than you think you need to. The early bird gets the worm!
  • Expect mega crowds. Literally, thousands upon thousands of people will be jostling for a spot.
  • Plan your route. There will be road closures and other traffic arrangements from 6pm onwards— plus some MTR exits are often closed. So be prepared to take a detour to your destination… think of it as the scenic route!
  • Keep an eye on your stuff! With such crowds, remember to keep a tight grip on your valuables.

If you’re not up for the crowds (we hear ya!), the best viewing spot may just be the most convenient: your living room. The fireworks should be broadcast live on free local TV channels so you can enjoy the spectacle from the comfort of your sofa.

Alternatively, book a table at a Harbour-view restaurant or a private party room! There’s no better time to pay a little more to get a less hectic, unobstructed view. Just a few of the restaurants that offer a view of Victoria Harbour include Cruise Restaurant & Bar, ALTO Bar & Grill and The Regent Hong Kong.

Cheung Chau Bun Festival (Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival)

Cheung Chau Bun Festival (Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival)

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival, aka Cheung Chau Da Jiu Festival or Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, is a seven-day Taoist sacrificial ceremony that is celebrated annually. It originated in the 18th century when Cheung Chau (then infiltrated by pirates) was affected by a plague. Residents and local fishermen paraded the village disguised as deities to drive away evil spirits.

The festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth month of the Lunar calendar and it usually coincides with Buddha’s Birthday (which means you can make the most of the public holiday!).

Each year, the Bun Festival attracts thousands of goers who gather to witness the colourful parades coupled with traditional lion and dragon dance, and the ‘bun snatching competition’. Three towers are placed by the Pak Tai Temple and are entirely covered by buns (plastic ones) and competitors race to the top to snatch as many buns as possible (the more the buns, the better the fortune).

Note that during the Bun Festival, the entire island goes vegetarian for three days – most of the restaurants also adhere to this traditional so meat and seafood options may be removed from the menu during these days. Click for more info on the Cheung Chau Bun Festival.

Cheung Chau Food

Since it was historically a fishing village, the seafood is the main attraction! But there are also traditional Cantonese restaurants, along with Western-style places, so rest assured there is something delicious for everyone.

Sassy Tip: Most places are cash only, so hit the ATM before you head out there or stop off at the island’s HSBC or various convenience stores.

If you’ve ever queued for a “must-try” bite in Hong Kong only to think… wait, that’s it? We definitely know the feeling. Team Sassy’s hit the streets, braved the queues and taste-tested the viral hotspots, and now we dish what’s truly worth the hype, what you can skip and what to take with a (literal) pinch of salt!

Social media and constant hype from peers or colleagues can lead you to (sometimes falsely) believe you’ve really found the ultimate food spot in Hong Kong. Plus, in a city where queuing is a national pastime, long lines can often create undeserved hype. So Team Sassy’s done the legwork for you, putting Hong Kong’s most popular food tourist spots to the test. From viral snacks to iconic eateries, we spill the tea on what’s worth your time if you’re exploring or visiting (and what’s not).

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Vission Bakery Gluten Free Chocolate Slice

Vission Bakery — Beloved bakery serving up flavourful cakes, danishes, cookies and pastries

While you might have spotted the long lines and tourists snapping pics outside the little bakery, don’t write it off as overhyped before you test this one for yourself! With a solid range of cakes and danishes ranging from the Pistachio Danish to the Vanilla Flan (both recommended by Managing Editor Stef) to a classic chewy Chocolate Chip cookie (Editor Jess’s recommendation), Sassy’s marketing coordinator, Megan, recommends the gluten-free chocolate fudge slice. “It was delicious and didn’t taste like most gluten-free cakes, which are dry and often have a boring texture,” she raves. “The cake was so rich and moist, but definitely dense, so I would recommend halving it with someone.”

Sassy Tip: Don’t forget to check out the bakery kitchen, hidden just to the right of the shop, where you can get a load of the full range of slices and cakes up close!

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Tung Po Kitchen Wan Chai

Tung Po Kitchen — Established local Dai Pai Dong spot in Wan Chai

Nothing screams ‘I’m a local’ like hitting up a Dai Pai Dong, and among the city’s most popular include Tung Po Kitchen. Originally operating from North Point’s wet market, the vibe was pure chaos and magic. Managing Editor, Stef, reminisces: “There’s nothing better than devouring salted duck egg yolk shrimp, razor clams steamed with garlic vermicelli and squid ink spaghetti against the backdrop of a boozy karaoke rager.” After the restaurant’s closure in 2022, the Wan Chai reboot proves to be “fun enough” with the same flavourful dishes and noise level, but “misses the grit that made the place,” so we recommend still checking out the spot, but go in knowing the original operated on higher levels of chaos and rowdiness.

Sassy Tip: Prawns are now upsold at eye-watering prices that made our wallets weep, so remember to check first!

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Cheung Hing Coffee Shop Happy Valley Pineapple Bun

Cheung Hing Coffee Shop — Happy Valley’s old-school cha chaan teng with fresh buns and affordable bites

For Editor Jess, no pineapple bun in the city can compare to this decades-long eatery. She raves, “The egg tarts and noodles are good too, but I think every tourist should visit Hong Kong and get a pineapple bun from here. They’re crunchy on top and so soft and fluffy on the inside, there’s a reason my family have been coming here for years!” Plus, the spot riffs on the classic pineapple bun with fillings like egg, spam, ham or beef, which are little upgrades that feel inventive without messing too much with the soul of the original pastry.

Sassy Tip: We recommend hitting up this spot in the morning or around 3pm, when a fresh batch of pineapple buns emerges from the oven!

Hoi Kee Siumei Shop (海記燒臘飯店) — Roast meat spot located in Causeway Bay wet market food court

A few members of our team visited Hoi Kee Siumei Shop in our quest to test the indoor food markets revered amongst Hong Kong foodies. Although you do have to pass through the market’s aromas initially (a slightly intimidating experience!), our team thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Client Engagement Manager, Ira, notes, “The food offers great value, especially if you’re looking for authentic local dishes. I ordered the roast duck and char siu combo with rice, which I would definitely recommend!”

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Australia Dairy Company

Australia Dairy Company — Local favourite breakfast spot with a simple yet strong menu

While a controversial restaurant in the past thanks to its reputation for rude service, in recent years, this spot has definitely toned down the sass and speed-eating pressure. As for food quality, several have noted it’s “just eggs and toast”, but to those, we say — try the restaurant again when it’s less busy. We find the eggs consistently fluffy and flavourful, and the macaroni soup, simple as it is, delivers a warm, comforting broth that’s never too salty. We’ve yet to try another cha chaan teng that does eggs quite as well as this Jordan classic.

Sassy Tip: If you hit up this spot for lunch or dinner, ham macaroni is substituted with char sui instead, and we actually prefer this combo!

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Bakehouse egg tarts

Bakehouse — Grégoire Michaud’s handcrafted sourdough and fine pastry bakery

It’s popular for a reason, and this bakery definitely deserves a visit (and a bit of a queue!). Of course, go for the egg tarts made with a perfectly-paired sourdough crust, but stay for its dining menus (the Wan Chai branch now serves dinner!), which offer quality dishes with respectful nods to Hong Kong’s culinary history!

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Tim Ho Wan Dim Sum

Tim Ho Wan — MICHELIN-starred dim sum with several branches

The MICHELIN star may be the marker of greatness most restaurants aim for, but with so many stellar dim sum spots in the 852, we might skip this one. While it does offer affordable MICHELIN dim sum and the char siu pineapple buns are impeccable, the extremely long queuing times and rushed service make this one often a miss in our books. We recommend One Dim Sum instead, a local spot with shorter waits and consistently fresh, flavour-packed bites. And if you’re craving a more elevated dim sum moment, The Mira’s Cuisine Cuisine is a go-to among chic local diners who know their stuff.

Sassy’s Guide To The Real Hits, Misses & Must-Try Bites In Hong Kong Samsen Boat Noodles

Samsen — Flavourful Thai spot with long queues

A casual and vibrant Thai food spot with branches around Hong Kong Island, you’ll often spot hungry diners queuing from 5pm for its 6pm dinner seating. The food is exciting and mouth-watering, with dishes like Crab Fried Rice and Wagyu beef & flat noodles delivering in flavour and spice levels. However, the lines can often be a deterrent and negative to the popular spot. Give this spot a go if you can snag a table at a decent hour, but we’re also big fans of Thonglor in Kowloon City for a truly authentic Thai experience, with homemade ice cream, short wait time, affordable prices and that Rémy-from-Ratatouille food moment.

Chagee — Global Chinese tea chain specialising in oriental tea made modern

The aroma of Chagee drew us in, in addition to its stunning merchandise, so we were willing to overlook the long queues in hopes of a rewarding tea fix. But (forgive us if being naive), Chagee is not a bubble tea spot, and you won’t find classic pearls here. That being said, the hype is real — the tea is deliciously rich, and the kind you could never successfully recreate at home.
