What Is A ‘Coffee Rave’ & Why Is It Compelling?

Originating in European cities like Amsterdam and London, ‘coffee raves’ are a kind of party held during daytime or afternoon that cater to sober (or sober-curious!) music lovers, AKA those who want to dance and mingle without the associated inebriation. A far cry from ’80s underground parties typical of raving, these events have started popping up in and around Asia, particularly in cafes (hence the term ‘coffee rave’). An unlikely spot for live DJ sets, perhaps, but that seems to be the point — unlike warehouses or clubs, local coffee shops also offer a welcoming environment for those who might not otherwise frequent nightlife events.

The trend parrots what is often reported about Gen Z and Gen Alpha, that younger generations are drinking less and are generally more concerned with health than their predecessors. Alternative subcultures, party-girl-core and traditional nightlife are still popular, of course (who can forget Brat summer…), but young peoples’ surge in interest towards sobriety is telling. These generations came of age at the peak of social media, then had major milestones stifled by the pandemic. Having spent their entire adolescence forced to exist online, many crave organic social interaction — removed from screens, yes, but also with clear heads, so that the relationships formed and experiences had are not forgotten the next day.

Social Club Series — Parties At Unique Spots

Co-founders Sandy and Isaac began Social Club Series in March 2025, not expecting it to blow up. But after their first event — at a cafe, featuring Toronto-based DJ  DCR Milda — went viral on social media, Hong Kongers immediately began asking when the next party would be. Since then, the duo has hosted 10 sober-friendly daytime raves (venues range from pizza parlours to Soho House), many of which have sold out. The organisers say that their crowds are usually very diverse, but that most attending are between 25 and 30 years old.

Made From Mushroom — Wellness Brand’s Sober Events

Local wellness brand Made By Mushroom hosted its first daytime party this summer with a host of DJs, and we were not disappointed! The caffeine provider is known for integrating medicinal mushrooms (cordyceps, reishi, lion’s mane) into its drinks for a dose of natural, slow-release energy (as opposed to dramatic spikes), so it’s fitting that its ventured into hosting sober events.
